I found my Byredo.
Velvet Haze is sheer, watery (since when did coconut water become the most gorgeous opening ever?), and soooo sexy, but in a way that doesn’t scream Victoria’s Secret. It’s patchouli as you’ve never sniffed it before, transformed by the genius of Ben Gorham into something intoxicatingly cool. Gorham is unapologetic about his unusual approach to fragrance creation. He doesn’t set out to make a rose perfume, or a perfume that a certain woman might wear (although apparently he made Blanche for his girlfriend and she didn’t like it so maybe he learned his lesson). He creates scent the way we interact with it at its most powerful, that memory slam when you catch some familiar smell, or that almost indescribable emotional response you get from a perfume that pushes your buttons. Velvet Haze pushes those buttons for me…
Apparently for this release, Gorham constructed mood boards filled with old photos of rock climbers from the 60’s. Climbers a little like this, I guess:
But that doesn’t mean he and perfumer Jerome Epinette made a perfume that smells like rocks. What it does smell like is a faded dream of being up in the clouds, physically and psychedelically maybe, of sweet sweaty skin, pure in its nostalgia.
And about the progression? Velvet Haze has the trippiest progression on my skin. It’s a refreshingly cool opening, but with this skin-like, pale patchouli memory coating the droplets of coconut water. But then, the fragrance morphs into an earthy cocoa, spicy thing. It’s almost smoky and suuuuper cool. Ok, choc-patchouli, I get that. But the 60’s-sexy-cocoa adds its puff a good 4 hours into the wear. Surprise, fluffy clouds of sweet perfect musk, not a sour note in the house. It’s clean again and oh-so-lovely, tulle skirts and puppies.
I absolutely adore this scent, it’s captivating without being challenging, unusual but totally wearable. Fans of Narciso for Her should definitely check it out but it’s a different (and in my opinion more beautiful) journey.
Velvet Haze is available in Australia from Mecca Cosmetica.
